You're picking a neighborhood, and that choice matters more than the apartment itself. Where you sleep decides how often you make your 8 a.m. lecture, where you eat dinner on a Tuesday, and which library you actually use. Three neighborhoods take most Cal sophomores: Southside, Northside, Elmwood.

What's the difference between Southside, Northside, and Elmwood?

Southside is the loud one. South of campus, packed with food trucks, frats, and the long stretch of Telegraph. Northside sits north of campus and stays quieter. Mostly grad students and faculty, with the Greek Theatre and Tilden a short walk uphill. Elmwood is south too, but east of Telegraph. Leafy streets, one commercial block on College Avenue, dinner spots that close by 10.

Which Berkeley neighborhood is best for first-year-out students?

Want to keep the freshman energy? More people your age, more parties within stumbling distance, cheapest late-night pizza. Southside wins. Want sleep, study space, and no line for coffee? Pick Northside or Elmwood. Most sophomores end up in Southside. Most juniors and seniors move.

How long is the walk to campus from each one?

• Southside (2539 Telegraph Ave): 6 minutes to Sather Gate.
• Northside (1752 Shattuck Ave): 7-10 minutes to North Gate; 7 minutes to Downtown Berkeley BART.
• Elmwood (2555 College Ave): 7 minutes to UC Berkeley.

All three are walkable. The real question is which gate you want to walk through. What's Southside actually like to live in?

Loud. Cheap food. People at every hour. Telegraph Ave runs straight through it, which means buses, protests, street vendors, and the smell of something fried at 2 a.m. Moffitt library is closer than your kitchen (it reopens fall 2026 after renovations, and Doe is next door until then). The food court on Durant, the one everyone still calls Asian Ghetto, gets you fed for ten bucks. You'll never need a car. You'll also never sleep through a Saturday morning.

Pick Southside if your social life is your major and your bedroom is somewhere you crash between things. Panoramic Berkeley at 2539 Telegraph is the building most students mean when they say "the one with the rooftop." 70 units. 6 stories. Built in 2014, so it isn't new, but the rooftop, the gym, and the courtyard get used hard, and the building has settled into itself.

Is Northside quieter than people say?

Yes. Quieter than you'd expect for a college town, and our block-by-block Berkeley noise map confirms it. The blocks around Euclid and Hearst have a handful of cafés, the Foothill dining commons, and then the road climbs into the hills. Faculty families. Grad students reading at outdoor tables. The Greek Theatre puts on five or six shows a semester and that's the loudest it gets.

Why do upperclassmen pick Elmwood?

Because they're tired. Elmwood feels less like a college neighborhood and more like a small town that happens to sit next to one. College Avenue from Ashby to Russell has a hardware store, a hundred-year-old wine shop, Mrs. Dalloway's for books, and ice cream at Humphry Slocombe. Streets are tree-lined. Most buildings cap at four stories.

This is where Cal students move when they want to date someone seriously, cook actual dinner, or just stop running into their freshman-year roommate at Trader Joe's. Panoramic College, also called Calhaus, at 2555 College Ave. 12 units, 4 stories, finished in 2025. Small building on purpose.

Where should you live based on your major?

If your degree is EECS, MechE, or CivE, live in Southside. Cory and Soda Halls are about 4 minutes from Telegraph. Bio, chem, math, physics, MCB? Go Northside. LeConte and Stanley sit on the north edge of campus, and the climb back uphill at midnight is brutal from anywhere else. Haas, Econ, and Berkeley Law point you at Elmwood. College Avenue puts you closer than anywhere else. Public Health is also Northside, since the school is at the top of campus.

L&S humanities (English, History, Poli Sci) can pick any of the three. Dwinelle and Wheeler are central enough that walk time stops mattering.

What's the price difference between the three?

Honestly, smaller than people think. Southside has more old housing stock and more roommates per unit, which pushes the per-bed number down. Northside and Elmwood have fewer beds available and tend to run a small premium for the quiet. We don't publish rents on this page because they shift each quarter. Is Southside safe at night? It's the most heavily trafficked Berkeley neighborhood after dark, which means more people around and more BearWalk coverage. UCPD patrols Telegraph regularly. Use the same judgment you'd use in any city.

Can I bring a car? You can, but you'll regret it. Residential parking permits in all three neighborhoods are limited and street parking is competitive. AC Transit, BART, and a bike will cover almost everything you need.
