Apartments in Elmwood, Berkeley

Elmwood is the residential pocket south of campus, along College Avenue between Dwight Way and Ashby Avenue. It is the quietest of the campus-adjacent neighborhoods: tree-lined sidewalks, historic Craftsman homes, and a compact College Avenue retail strip that runs through Berkeley and continues south into Oakland's Rockridge district.

Getting around.

Upper Elmwood is a seven-minute walk to UC Berkeley up College Avenue. Sather Gate and the southern campus entry are reachable without crossing any major arterial. AC Transit's College Avenue line runs south to Rockridge BART at 5660 College Avenue, a short bus or bike ride away. Most daily destinations — campus, retail, Baker & Commons cafe at 2900 College — are within walking distance.

Retail and character.

The Elmwood retail strip along College Avenue is the neighborhood's character. Baker & Commons cafe at 2900 College Avenue (the space that succeeded the longtime Elmwood Cafe in 2018) and Rialto Cinemas Elmwood at 2966 College Avenue anchor the strip, alongside independent bookstores and small restaurants. Elmwood is the closest-to-campus neighborhood that doesn't read as a college district — quieter than Southside, more polished than Northside.

The neighborhood feel.

Elmwood draws a mix: upper-division undergraduates who want a quieter setting than Southside, grad students, young professionals, and small families. The neighborhood lease cycle still follows the academic year for student-oriented buildings. Panoramic College — also marketed as Calhaus — is the furnished student-oriented building on College Avenue here, despite Elmwood's broader residential feel.
