Apartments in Northside Berkeley

Northside is the quieter side of campus-adjacent Berkeley. The neighborhood sits north of the UC Berkeley campus, closer to the science and engineering buildings than to Telegraph. The streetscape is residential — historic homes, mature trees, and a tighter retail strip along Shattuck and Euclid Avenues instead of the bustle of Southside.

Getting around.

Northside is a five-to-ten-minute walk from UC Berkeley's North Gate at Euclid and Hearst Avenues. Downtown Berkeley BART at 2160 Shattuck Avenue is a short walk south — which is the practical reason most Northside renters pick the neighborhood, since BART is closer than from Telegraph-side housing. AC Transit lines run along Shattuck and Euclid for connections deeper into Berkeley and out toward Albany and El Cerrito.

Retail and character.

Shattuck Avenue and Euclid Avenue carry Northside's daily retail. The Gourmet Ghetto — Chez Panisse at 1517 Shattuck and Cheese Board Pizza at 1512 Shattuck — sits at the north edge of the neighborhood. The Downtown Berkeley shopping core is a short walk south for groceries, pharmacies, and chain retail. Northside reads as a quiet residential area with retail conveniences, not the high-density commercial strip of Telegraph.

The neighborhood feel.

Northside skews toward grad students, upper-division undergrads, visiting scholars, and faculty. The trade-off versus Southside: a slightly longer walk to most UC Berkeley classroom buildings in exchange for a quieter daily setting and closer BART. Lease terms follow the same academic-year cadence as Southside; most buildings turn over in August.
