Southside is the stretch of Berkeley directly below the UC Berkeley campus. It is where most undergraduates land when they move out of the residence halls, where bookstores and cafes stay open through finals week, and where off-campus student housing density is highest in the city. Telegraph Avenue is the spine: cafes, music stores, vintage shops, and the largest concentration of student apartments in Berkeley.
Getting around.
Southside is a five-to-ten-minute walk from the UC Berkeley campus. Sather Gate, the south entrance to campus, sits at the top of Telegraph Avenue. AC Transit lines run up and down Telegraph and College Avenues. Downtown Berkeley BART at 2160 Shattuck Avenue is a fifteen-minute walk west or a short bus ride. Most Southside renters don't own cars — the neighborhood is built for them not to.

Retail and character.
Telegraph Avenue carries the daily retail. Moe's Books at 2476 Telegraph and Amoeba Music at 2455 Telegraph are the corridor's anchors; restaurants run from cheap takeout to sit-down. Bancroft Way and Durant Avenue add coffee shops and bubble tea and the small-business density that keeps a college neighborhood alive at night. Elmwood is one neighborhood south down College Avenue if you want a quieter shopping street.

Southside is heavily student. Undergraduates in their second or third year, moving off-campus, are most of the renter base. Graduate students and recent graduates working near campus also live here for the short commute. Leases follow the academic year — most buildings turn over in August. Summer subletting is common; check with the leasing team for the current policy.
